Polaris Water Heater

The Polaris water heater is a product made by American Water Heaters out of Ashland City, Tennessee. American Water Heaters makes a full line of residential as well as commercial water heaters, and has a reputation for making water heating products of outstanding quality backed up by superior customer service. Part of the reason for this reputation that the company has is their making and distributing of their Polaris water heaters.

The Polaris water heater is well known among builders and homeowners for its great capability with pace heating, a rugged and sturdy stainless steel construction, and its ease of installation. This water heater has been specifically designed to provide superior service to large homes with its blend of space heating and domestic hot water heating applications.

Technology

The Polaris water heater was engineered to have a submerged combustion chamber with a spiral flue. Such a design provides the home owner with an outstanding 96 percent thermal efficiency in addition to ultra-low standby heat loss of only about one percent.

In addition it features a power/direct venting system which vents up to 120 feet by utilizing either a two-inch or three-inch ABS, PVC, or CPVC pipe either through the roof or through the wall.

  • With through the wall venting, this water heater can provide forced-air hydronic heat as well as radiant hydronic heat. If the home owner is using forced-air heating, the water heater mixes an air handler which provides comfortable space heating with potable hot water.
  • If you’re using radiant heating, then the potable hot water gets circulated through the hot water heating tubes running under your floor. With either option, a large home is comfortably and efficiently heated. The Polaris water heater even includes an ultra-quiet blower and burner for minimizing noise.

Energy Effeciency

Water HeatersWhen it comes to fuel efficiency, the Polaris is superior to the standard gas water heater. While that heats as much as 41 gallons per hour (GPH), the Polaris can heat up to 386 gallons per hour (GPH) at a 60 degree Fahrenheit rise, providing significantly enhanced performance so often desired by those larger families in need of additional hot water.

It is worth noting that all of this advanced technology is “plug-and-play”. No special adjustments at initial start-up are needed. There are three external LED lights to indicate the Polaris’ operational status. What’s more, you get 24-volt thermostat control, a thermistor temperature sensor, a full flow brass drain valve, a factory-installed T&P valve, hot surface ignition, zero clearance to combustibles, a factory-provided condensate trap, and multiple one-inch brass tank connections.

Part of the Polaris water heater "secret" is that it is engineered for sealed combustion within a woven fiber premix burner. This means that it has superior resistance to thermal and mechanical shock, even at very high temperatures. The uniform combustion yields excellent heat transfer. The Polaris even meets Low NOx requirements for California and Texas making it a strong choice in the range of energy efficient tank water heaters.

How can such high efficiency of 96% be reached?

Again, it’s a matter of superior engineering. The unit's quiet, brushless DC blower pre-purges the submerged combustion chamber for eight seconds. Meanwhile, the hot surface ignitor is being energized and made extremely hot. The blower precisely mixes together air and gas for combustion. This mixture gets forced through so that it passes across the entire burner, yielding clean combustion with Low NOx emissions. The combustion chamber wall transfers extreme heat from the flame to the water. Then, the blower forces hot combustion gases through the spiral coil, and this action scrubs the remaining heat from the hot gases. As combustion gas exits the bottom of the spiral coil, it's hardly even warm to the touch.

It’s probably clear to you by now that the Polaris water heater is a very important addition to any larger-than-average home or household. It’s also the perfect heating source if you decide to use hydronic radiant heating for your home, as more and more people are doing these days.
